The series of books about Harry Potter, written by J.K.Rowling, is a pearl of modern literature and a synonym of success. The story about the wizard boy has become a cult classics for several generations of people while making Joanne Rowling one of the most widely known writers.

The books describe a chronicle of the adventures of a young wizard Harry Potter and his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger who study at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The main storyline is a confrontation between Harry and the dark wizard Lord Voldemort, also known as the Dark Lord. Voldemort’s main goal is to kill Harry, gain immortality and enslave the magical world.

The Harry Potter series consists of 7 books that have risen a new interest in reading in modern children. In this article, we present a short summary of all the Harry Potter books in order.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

The life of a ten-year-old Harry Potter is not so great. His parents were killed by a dark wizard Lord Voldemort when Harry was barely a one year old. Now he is forced to live with his uncle and aunt who clearly do not like the boy. But Harry’s eleventh birthday changes everything. Harry learns that he is a pure-blood wizard and accepted to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

On the way to Hogwarts, Harry meets future friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Children quickly learn who their enemies are. One of them is student Draco Malfoy supported by professor Severus Snape.

Once, Harry, Ron and Hermione accidentally enter the room where a three-headed dog Fluffy sits on the hatch to a dungeon. Friends can not wait to find out what exactly the animal is guarding.

After doing some investigation, friends learn that Fluffy was put to guard the philosopher’s stone. They assume that Severus Snape is trying to steal the philosopher’s stone for Lord Voldemort.

Harry and his friends decide to secretly enter the dungeon to find the philosopher’s stone. Inside, Harry walks up to a magic mirror and meets professor Quirrell. It turns out that Quirrell was trying to steal the philosopher’s stone for the Dark Lord. Harry tries to protect the stone and kills the professor.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

During the summer break, Harry meets a house-elf Dobby who tries to warn the boy about the danger that waits for him at Hogwarts. Harry ignores the warning and arrives at school with Ron Weasley on a flying car.

Harry starts his second year at Hogwarts but suddenly hears a strange whisper echoing in the empty school hallways. After that, students are found numb and looking like a stone. It seems that Dobby’s prediction starts to come true.

A legend about a Chamber of Secrets starts spreading across the school. According to this legend,  Salazar Slytherin created a Chamber of Secrets and placed a monster inside. Only Slytherin’s heir is able to open the chamber and release the monster who must kill all half-blood wizards.

During a duel against Draco Malfoy, Harry learns that he is a Parselmouth, meaning that he speaks the language of serpents. It is believed that Slytherin spoke this language, therefore everyone thinks that Harry is his heir. 

Meanwhile, Harry, Ron and Hermione begin their own investigation and learn that the Chamber of Secrets in fact exists. The monster locked inside is Basilisk, the King of Serpents, who is crawling through the pipes of the castle attacking students.

Friends discover the entrance to the chamber and Harry comes face to face with Basilisk and Lord Voldemort himself. With the help of Dumbledore, Harry manages to defeat the King of Serpents.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Harry is forced to spend one more summer with the Dursley family. He has a fight with his uncle and runs away from home. On the way, the boy learns about Sirius Black, who escaped from the prison of Azkaban.

Harry then meets Ron and Hermione. At the same time, Ron’s father warns Harry that Sirius Black is likely to hunt him and he should be careful.

While friends travel to school on the train, Harry is attacked by dementors, Azkaban guards that are now protecting Hogwarts. Fortunately, a new professor Remus Lupin rescues the boy and they become friends.

During the school year, Harry often sees a big black dog. He takes it as a sign of death, when in fact it was Sirius Black, guarding him.

With the help of the magic map, Harry visits Hogsmeade. He learns that Sirius Black framed Harry’s parents and killed their friend Peter Pettigrew. Harry decides to revenge the killer.

In the end, it turns out that the escaped prisoner is actually Harry’s godfather. Peter Pettigrew, on the other hand, is a traitor who became one of the Lord Voldemort’s followers.

Lupine turns into a werewolf and attacks Sirius Black. Meanwhile, Pettigrew manages to escape and Sirius is imprisoned.

Hermione and Harry use a time-turner to go back to the past and release Sirius Black.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

This year, Hogwarts is selected to host the Triwizard Tournament. Two more schools, Beauxbatons and Durmstrang, are taking part in this prestigious championship. According to the new rules, only students of at least 17 years of age are allowed to compete.

The Goblet of Fire chooses which students will represent their schools in the Triwizard Tournament. There is one participant from each school. However, someone with the help of a powerful magic makes the Goblet of Fire also select Harry Potter as the fourth participant.

Harry manages to successfully cope with the first two challenges. The final one takes the boy to the maze where he has to find the Goblet of Fire. Diggory, who represents Hogwarts, and Harry simultaneously reach to the Goblet of Fire and get transferred to the abandoned cemetery.

Peter Pettigrew appears on the cemetery and kills Diggory. At this moment, Harry realizes that it all was a rigged. After the ceremony, a terrible thing happens. Lord Voldemort is revived. The Dark Lord tries to kill Harry, but the boy escapes.

After returning to Hogwarts, everyone sees Diggory’s dead body. To answer the questions about what happened, scared Harry tells that Lord Voldemort is back. However, the Ministry of Magic does not believe him.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

The Dark Lord returns, thereby activating the secret community called the Order of the Phoenix, who have previously fought the Death Eaters.

Harry keeps seeing nightmares and his scar starts to hurt.  Soon he learns that the Dark Lord is searching for something in the Department of Mysteries in the Ministry of Magic.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Magic accuses Dumbledore of lies and sends a new teacher Dolores Umbridge to gain control over Hogwarts.

Harry and his friends create Dumbledore’s Army ( a secret community of students, something like the Order of the Phoenix), where they practice defense against the dark arts. After some time, the Dumbledore’s Army is being discovered. Dumbledore justifies the boys, blaming himself. But the Ministry of Magic still decides to send Dumbledore to Azkaban. However, Albus manages to escape. Dolores Umbridge becomes a Headmaster of Hogwarts.

Harry has a vision where Voldemort tortures Sirius Black. In order to help him, Harry and his friends discover a prophecy that Lord Voldemort was looking for but fall into a trap. This vision was created by the Dark Lord.

The Death Eaters want to take the prophecy away but fail and now just want to kill the young wizards. The Order of the Phoenix helps Harry, Ron and Hermione escape the trap.

Dumbledore fights Lord Voldemort but cannot kill him. The Dark Lord and his followers run away. After this incident, Dumbledore returns to be a Headmaster of Hogwarts.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

It is now Harry’s sixth year in Hogwarts. The boy gets a hold of a very old handbook on potions. A former student left his notes inside and signed himself as a Half-Blood Prince. Thanks to these notes, Harry is now the best one in class.

Dumbledore now gives Harry private lessons and teaches him about Horcruxes, objects where Lord Voldemort has hidden the fragments of his soul. This is the reason why the Dark Lord did not die after Harry’s first attack several years ago. Two Horcruxes have already been destroyed. The remaining five still need to be found.

The third Horcruxes is the Slytherin’s Locket, but the Dark Lord prevented Dumbledore and Harry from destroying it. The locket is taken by an unknown person.

Malfoy joins the Death Eaters and attempts to kill Albus Dumbledore but fails. Harry observes everything while hiding inside the cloak of invisibility. Suddenly, Snape kills Dumbledore and tries to escape along with Malfoy. Harry Potter is chasing them. Finally, Snape reveals that he is a Half-Blood Prince.

In the end, there is a farewell to the deceased Hogwarts Headmaster. Harry swears not to return to the school ever again. He and his friends intend to find the remaining Horcruxes to destroy them.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

The Death Eaters preparing to kill Harry on the day of his seventeenth birthday, when the protecting magic will stop working.  But Harry once again escapes death.

Potter arrives at Weasley’s house. He learns that Lord Voldemort has seized the Ministry of Magic. The Weasley’s house is being attacked and friends have to run away. They find out that one of the Horcruxes is kept by Dolores Umbridge.

Harry, Ron and Hermione finally get a hold of a Horcrux, but it affects Ron and he runs away. To destroy the Horcrux, Harry and Hermione have to find the Sword of Gryffindor.

Hermione tells about the brothers who were original masters of the Deathly Hallows. Friends are captured by the followers of the Dark Lord. With the help of Dobby, all three of them manage to escape. However, the little savior dies.

To destroy another Horcrux, friends are going to the Gringotts Wizarding Bank. One more Horcrux is hidden in Hogwarts.

Turns out that Snape is now in charge of the school. The fight against the Dark Lord begins. Harry learns that he is a Horcrux and lets Voldemort kill himself.  However, Harry Potter does not die completely. The wizard starts a battle with Lord Voldemort and with the help of his powerful wand kills the leader of the dark forces.
